Merry Christmas with a new Daikatana 1.3 Release! - update by DI-MeisterM

The official Daikatana 1.3 project has released a new build for Windows and Linux. You can grab the latest December 2019 build from the project page.

This release brings you a couple of fixes since the last update:

  • Add client-side hack for Sunflares so their particles don't disappear when going through teleporters.
  • Sanity check currententity in R_LightPoint.
  • Move ATTR_ defines from p_user.h to dk_shared.h.
  • Fix the "crouching" effect that happens sometimes when returning from viewing a monitor.
  • Fix particles disappearing for Venomous when going through teleporters in DM.
  • Remove unusued r_lightlevel CVAR and stale code. Keep byte lightlevel in ucmd structs until next protocol update; for now just send down a 0.
  • Fix bottom line of credits always showing up full brightness in x64. Also simplify the scrolling code.
  • Add 160Hz and 240Hz to gl_displayrefresh.
  • Save a few cycles by not doing a stricmp for checking if vid_ref == "soft" since the software renderer hasn't worked since 1998. Make sure we set "vid_ref" to "gl", not "soft"!
  • Fix speed boost to use sv_statboost_time CVAR.
  • Remove unused MAX_FRAME_SKIP Nelno leftover. Implement the NET_Sleep in SV_Frame (from Q2 3.17).
  • Null terminate userinfo string in SVC_DirectConnect. From Q2 v3.17.
  • Add cl_no_compressed_svc_frames CVAR for dial-up friends that can't keep up.
  • Fix full-screen console activated by shift+tilde in-game only rendering half size.
  • Changed scr_conspeed default to 5000 from 3.
  • Added RF_IGNOREPVS flag. Needed so we can cleanly redo the Venomous and Sunflare projectiles when going through teleporters. The previous way caused strange things to happen on high pings.

The official Daikatana 1.3 project has released a new build for Windows and Linux. You can grab the latest December 2018 build from the project page.

This release brings you for the first time 64bit versions for Windows & Linux and a massive amount of updates, bugfixes and new features, like:

  • 130+ bug fixes.
  • 2000+ sanity checks avoiding many potential crashes.
  • A new "Gun FOV" CVAR to allow controlling the Gun FOV independently from your view FOV (can be controlled via the in-game menu or r_gunfov CVAR).
  • Map updates to e1m5b for misaligned textures on monitors, e2m5e to fix the disappearing particles and node path fixes for e2m4d.
  • Windows only: Ref_gl and game DLLs are merged into the binary. Making debugging a little easier and may give a small performance boost on old machines.

You can keep it up-to-date with the Windows Auto-Updater! I also mirrored all platform builds on my server aswell:

Daikatana Speedrun during AGDQ 2017 ! - update by DI-MeisterM

I know this isn't exactly a news because I'm posting it that late. Never the less I think it's pretty cool that the speedrunner cubeface played Daikatana during the AGDQ 2017 event beginning of the year.

You can check out the speedrun with the category "Any % - No Sidekicks" on Youtube right HERE (the run starts at 13:40).
cubeface finished the game in 51:36!

[HCI]Mara'akate send me news about a new dktools package for Win32, which is now available:

"Knightmare has been working on a new toolset for Win32 that makes it easier to compile maps (you no longer have to rely on batch files!) and helps with texture set generation.

The new dktools package includes:
* e3m1a, e1m3b, and e3m1c as example maps.
* A new version of ION Radiant which has various bug fixes, larger grid modes and support for maps with much larger coordinates (+/-16384).
* Updated BSP, VIS, RAD compilers.  Including support for up to 4096 entities.
* DK Otter front end.

What's new for Daikatana 1.3 in 2017? - update by DI-MeisterM

[HCI]Mara'akate send me news about the plans for 2017 for DK 1.3 of the dev team:

"The past few weeks I ([HCI]Mara'akate) have been working on a new build of DK that fixes some long standing bugs, closing up some memory leaks, and a more enhanced coop experience.  There is an experimental server running on my local machine at marabbs.no-ip.org, but the Mara'akate servers are also running this experimental code.  There needs to be a weekend where we play some DM on my servers and make sure everything is OK.  It seems to be the last time we played on it.  Once that's been tested and SP has gone through again there should be a new build.

Knightmare has been hard at work on a utility named DK_Otter which is a GUI utility to easily compile maps.  You will no longer have to rely on fooling around with batch files in Windows to compile a map.  The utility allows all sorts of customization for fine tuning bsp/vis/rad options.  He is also working on fixing up the arghrad code to work on modern compilers.  When this is complete a new dk_tools set will be released, including a new ION Radiant that has a few updates and bug fixes.  He is also planning on merging e2m5a/e2m5b and e2m5c/e2m5d into two separate maps.

Dekonega has been working on a linux auto-update utility, ported from the dk_upd.exe code, as well as eventual GUI version of the tool that will look similar to the DK v1.2 patch GUI.  He is also working on a port of the q3 version of aerowalk and a new, unique map for DKDM.  He gets sidetracked on map development, so be sure to message him and encourage him to finish it!

When this stuff is complete and ready for release my next goal is to start learning what is up with the AI issues.  The biggest problem right now is that the sight line/path code has problems with enemies being able to climb on top of each other, AI having problems going around 90 degree corners to get to you.  They tend to want to try a 45 degree angle and slam into walls.  These problems affect monsters and sidekicks.  When these issues are resolved I believe some of the sillier aspects to sidekicks should be gone.

"An update is available for the Daikatana v1.3 Map Update pack (pak6.pak).

This addresses a few single player issues. Mainly the Deathspheres sometimes getting in the nitrogel pool that lowers by a valve in e1m6a and the misaligned texture on the exit gate in e3m5a. It is highly recommend to upgrade to this pak or it could affect your connectivity to coop servers."

John Romero and Adrian Carmack decided to put the BLACKROOM Kickstarter campaign on hold:

First off: I wish you all a happy new year and that most of your goals will be accomplished!

The developer of Daikatana 1.3 have released a first Mac build. You can download it HERE.

I tested it with a fully clean version of Daikatana 1.2. You need to extract the contents of the zip and start the Daikatana app. Then you have to point it to the DATA directory of the Daikatana 1.2 installation.

"There is a new version of Daikatana 1.3 for Windows Clients. This is a preliminary version of the new protocol which includes HTTP Downloading, Compressed Packets, Fixes the packet overflowing issues on connect, Map and gamemode voting, Spectator Mode and a wide range of bug fixes and features.

Currently the [HCI]Mara'akate servers are exclusively using this protocol. A Linux version is planned to follow in a few weeks. Knightmare has been busy the past year but has returned and has pushed some new udpates to further reduce packet sizes across the network so we don't want to force the upgrade over DaikatanaNews (server) until this is finalized... but rest assured the work is progressing.

We also have a little Christmas easter egg in this version. All weather effects have been replaced with snow and the Christmas song "Deadly Gentleman" from Rise of The Triad will play.

Many players reporting issues regarding "version dismatches" of map files while trying to connect to the DaikatanaNews Gameserver, especially with map "e2m2a".

I've replaced all PAK files on the Gameserver, it uses now the PAK files from Daikatana 1.3 release "Windows pre-Beta version from 2015-01-23 FULL PACKAGE". Make sure you don't have any of these maps in your Data/Maps folder (because they're included in pak5.pak):

Daikatana Pre-Release Archive, Wiki and more! - update by DI-MeisterMI've received a couple of emails by Teflon regarding a Daikatana Pre-Release Archive Materials collection, which includes videos, concept arts, magazine scans, screenshots and more. You can grab the collection HERE.

Teflon has also created a Daikatana Pre-Alpha Wiki page where he publishes all kind of information regarding the Pre-Alpha version of Daikatana, which John Romero released in 2004.


Last, but not least, Teflon created a tiny mod, which replaces E2 spiders with gryphons and Satyr. You can download it HERE.

GameSpy Master Servers Shutdown - Workarounds for Daikatana - update by DI-MeisterMEffective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy.
That means, without GameSpy's master server it won't be possible to find any Daikatana multiplayer servers in the ingame browser (or any other browser).

Thanks to Ron Mercer's Qtracker GameSpy Server Emulation there's a workaround available for you! I wrote down a detailed article which describes how to fix this issue.

You can simply join it by opening the ingame console with this command:

connect dkserver.daikatananews.net:27992If you want a permant availability in your Daikatana ingame server-browser you can add it also to your own config or autoexec.cfg file in the ..\Daikatana\Data folder:

set adr0 "dkserver.daikatananews.net:27992"

Daikatana is now available on Steam - update by DI-MeisterM

It looks like the big bosses of Square Enix decided to release Daikatana for $6.99 on Valve's Steam Store. There are no details available if this is a modified version of the game for modern hardware or not. The only information I know is that they don't have a single code line of the Daikatana 1.3 source code.

OpenKatana updates - update by DI-MeisterM

Mark "hogsy" Sowden has posted news about his OpenKatana project. Peter Horvath joined the development for creating ingame music. You can listen to some previews HERE and HERE. In other news, the official developer blog has been moved. The project is running better than ever and should be finished this year. Fingers crossed!

OpenKatana is now on moddb - update by DI-MeisterM

Mark "hogsy" Sowden, project leader of OpenKatana, brought me the first news item for the new month: OpenKatana is now available on ModDB/IndieDB! The launch brings you a couple of screenshots and a small teaser video about the weapon models. Enjoy!

Daikatana 1.3 teasing: Widescreen - update by DI-MeisterM

Daikatana 1.3, a not so secret project anymore, got now the first teaser trailer on Youtube. There you can see how the game looks, how the main menu aspect ratio got fixed and many more, new additions. It's coming... :)

On a side note: I've updated the Daikatana Linux Server for DaikatanaNews with the lastest binaries aswell. Don't worry: it's still compatible with version 1.2!

Mark "hogsy" Sowden just emailed me the latest news regarding his project OpenKatana:

"[...]I've recently been working on quite a major overhaul of the engine which has led to a lot of the game-logic and menu system to be almost completely rewritten (and on top of that I have some other bits I'm working on such as an in-engine "editor environment"), however it's also put a lot of strain on both of us as rewriting a lot of the game-logic has taken longer than anticipated, we had originally started the rewrite at the end of last year and we're still working on it. [...] It's rather bothersome as there's a lot of fantastic things that have recently happened surrounding OpenKatana and I'd love to go into them but I'll probably save that for another time. All I can really say right now is that I hope this'll be the equivalent of Daikatana 2 ;)

Daikatana Multiplayer Event on upcoming Monday! - update by DI-MeisterM

Kyle Gagliardo, who's responsible for a classic gaming Facebook page called Vinticuffs! is currently organizing a multiplayer event for Daikatana. Currently it's scheduled 6 PM (US TIME) on Monday, March 5. Pre-organisation will start on Facebook & Steam around 5 PM. I got this information from John Romero, it looks like he's participating aswell!
